Toad, loyal retainer to the Mushroom Throne. The only member of the Mushroom People that anyone cares about, Toad is always on hand to help the Mario Bros. in their fight against King Bowser Koopa. First appearing in Super Mario Bros., Toad endeared himself to everyone with his catch phrase, "Thank you Mario! But our Princess is in another castle."

By the time Super Mario Bros. 2 rolled along, Toad had become a full-fledged member of the Mario Bros. team, chucking turnips and flinging onions alongside the bros. and the Princess. In later Mario games, Toad played a much more secondary role, manning item shops and driving go karts. Toad's only starring role was in Wario's Woods, where he took on the big yellow guy all by himself. Today, Toad is still the most important retainer to the Mushroom Throne. Even if he is half the size of Mario, he's got a heart as big as a Grand Goomba.
